Description
Systematic position. The birch aphid (Calaphis betulaecolens) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized species that exclusively inhabits various species of the genus Betula, often appearing in significant numbers on birch foliage.
Host plants and damage. This pest primarily attacks white birch and silver birch. The aphids feed on the sap of the leaves, which leads to chlorosis, leaf curling, and premature senescence. Severe infestations can result in significant defoliation, particularly in young or stressed trees, reducing the overall vitality of the planting.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct seasonal stages. The species overwinters in the egg stage on the bark of twigs. In the spring, nymphs emerge to establish colonies.
