Calephorus

Calephorus is a genus of grasshoppers belonging to the family Acrididae within the order Orthoptera. These insects are commonly found in humid environments, often near wetlands or flooded areas, where they can become a significant agricultural pest if their population density reaches critical levels and they transition from wild grasses to cultivated crops.

These pests primarily target various graminaceous plants. Among the most susceptible are rice crops and perennial forage grasses. Due to their preference for moist, lush vegetation, they thrive in irrigation-dependent fields, where they can rapidly increase in numbers and cause localized but severe damage to plant populations.

The life cycle of Calephorus follows an incomplete metamorphosis process. The cycle typically includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited in soil or within the sheath of plants. Nymphs, which resemble smaller, wingless adults, go through several developmental instars, feeding voraciously on plant foliage before reaching the winged adult stage capable of flight.

The damage caused by Calephorus is characterized by extensive grazing on leaves, causing ragged edges and significant loss of biomass. This reduction in the green surface area inhibits the plant's ability to conduct photosynthesis, leading to stunted growth, weakened stalks, and potential secondary infections that further compromise the overall health and yield of the harvest.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Calephorus. Recommended strategies include deep plowing of fields after harvest to disrupt egg pods, mechanical weed control to remove host plants, and monitoring fields during the early stages of nymph development. Chemical controls, such as targeted insecticide applications, should only be employed when pest populations exceed defined economic thresholds.
