Cales

Description

The genus Cales, particularly the species Cales noacki, is recognized in agronomy as a crucial biological control agent. Belonging to the Hymenoptera order and the Aphelinidae family, these tiny wasps are highly specialized parasitoids that target specific pests, playing a fundamental role in maintaining health in citrus ecosystems.

These insects are primarily associated with citrus crops. Their main host is the woolly whitefly (Aleurothrixus floccosus), a notorious pest that infests the underside of leaves. By targeting this pest, Cales helps to protect citrus trees from severe infestations that could otherwise lead to significant foliage loss and physiological stress.

The biological life cycle of Cales is an evolutionary adaptation for managing host populations. The female adult parasitoid oviposits eggs inside the larvae of the whitefly. As the parasitoid larva matures, it consumes the host from the inside, ultimately killing it before the pest can reach the adult reproductive stage. This highly effective mechanism is a prime example of natural suppression.

The damage caused by the whitefly, which Cales mitigates, includes chlorosis, leaf shedding, and the development of sooty mold caused by honeydew excretions. By effectively reducing the number of whitefly larvae, Cales prevents the secondary fungal infections that drastically lower the marketability and yield of citrus fruits.

Management practices for incorporating Cales into an integrated pest management (IPM) program include:

  • Minimizing the use of broad-spectrum insecticides that negatively impact beneficial insect populations.
  • Preserving natural habitats within or near orchards to support the parasitoid's survival.
  • Implementing regular scouting to assess the ratio between the whitefly and the Cales population.
  • Utilizing selective, narrow-spectrum pesticides only when biological control is insufficient to keep the pest below the economic threshold.
