Walnut aphid

The walnut aphid (Callaphis juglandis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that exclusively affects walnut trees, particularly the Persian walnut (Juglans regia). These aphids are primarily found feeding on the undersides of leaves, which allows them to thrive while remaining somewhat protected from environmental factors.

The life cycle of this pest involves overwintering as eggs tucked within the crevices of the tree bark. As spring temperatures rise and leaves begin to unfold, the eggs hatch into nymphs, marking the start of a multi-generational cycle. Throughout the growing season, both winged and wingless forms reproduce rapidly, often leading to heavy infestations by mid-summer if left unmanaged.

Damage caused by the walnut aphid is characterized by the development of chlorotic spots along the main veins of the leaves. As the aphids feed, they extract sap, which disrupts the tree's photosynthetic capability. Prolonged or severe feeding leads to leaf yellowing, stunting of growth, and premature leaf drop, which weakens the tree's vigor and significantly reduces nut yield.

Furthermore, the aphids secrete large amounts of honeydew, a sticky substance that covers the foliage and nuts. This secretion serves as a medium for the growth of sooty mold, a dark fungal layer that covers the leaves. Sooty mold further inhibits photosynthesis and reduces the market value of the walnut crop by staining the outer husks and making the harvest sticky and difficult to process.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Cultural practices, such as maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation, help trees withstand aphid pressure. Monitoring using sticky traps is essential for timing interventions. Chemical control, when necessary, should involve systemic insecticides applied early in the season to prevent the population from reaching economic threshold levels.
