These are burrowing crustaceans that live a secretive life in deep burrows within the sediment of shallow marine and estuarine environments. In the field of aquaculture, they are considered pests due to their significant impact on the seabed stability and the physiological conditions of cultivated species.

This pest primarily damages crops grown in coastal farming operations, such as seaweed plantations or bivalve farms. As they dig their extensive burrow systems, Callianassa crustaceans loosen the substrate, which leads to soil erosion, damage to the root systems of cultivated marine plants, and a loss of stability in the substrate essential for the healthy growth of aquaculture species.

The biology of Callianassa is defined by their complex tunnel-building behavior. Adult individuals reach substantial sizes and reside in tunnels that allow for constant water circulation. Reproduction occurs in the water column, after which larvae settle on the bottom and begin constructing burrows that can reach depths of several meters, making them extremely difficult to detect and manage effectively.

The nature of the damage is primarily mechanical and ecological. The activity of these crustaceans causes excessive aeration of the bottom sediments and the suspension of particulate matter, which leads to the siltation of cultivation zones and a decrease in water clarity. The economic damage stems from the reduction of viable cultivation areas and the mortality of juveniles caused by the instability of the environment.

Protection measures require a multifaceted approach combining mechanical and chemical strategies, although control is often hindered by the depth of the burrows. Main control methods include:
