Small brown planthopper

Calligypona propinqua

Description

The small brown planthopper (scientific name Calligypona propinqua, often classified within the Laodelphax genus) is a significant pest belonging to the Delphacidae family in the order Hemiptera. These insects are widely recognized for their ability to inflict severe damage on cereal crops, primarily through sap-feeding and the transmission of damaging plant viruses.

This pest targets a variety of grain crops, including wheat, barley, oats, and rice, alongside various wild grass species. The planthoppers tend to congregate on the stems and leaves of host plants, where they feed on the phloem sap. This feeding behavior drains the plant of essential nutrients and disrupts its normal physiological functions.

The life cycle of the species consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Depending on regional temperatures, the insect can undergo multiple generations within a single growing season. Overwintering typically occurs in the nymphal stage protected within crop residues or the base of perennial grasses, allowing the population to rebound quickly once spring temperatures rise.

The damage caused by the small brown planthopper is twofold. Direct damage results in leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and general plant weakening. Indirect damage is often more critical, as the insect serves as a vector for various viral diseases, such as dwarf or stripe diseases, which can lead to total crop failure if not managed correctly.

Effective management strategies for controlling these pests include:

  • Maintaining field hygiene by eliminating grassy weeds that serve as alternate hosts.
  • Monitoring population levels using yellow sticky traps during sensitive growth stages.
  • Applying systemic insecticides when threshold levels are exceeded.
  • Encouraging biological control agents like predatory spiders and parasitic wasps in the field.
