Italian locust
Calliptamus italicus
Description
Systematic position: The Italian locust (Calliptamus italicus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This species is a significant agricultural pest that exhibits both solitary and gregarious phases. It is widely distributed across the Palearctic region and is known for its ability to form dense swarms in warm, arid environments.
Affected crops: This insect is a generalist feeder (polyphage) that attacks a wide variety of cultivated crops. It causes severe damage to small grains (wheat, barley, oats), corn, millet, sunflower, sugar beet, and various legumes. In regions with intensive vegetable production, it can also cause substantial losses to vegetables and perennial fodder grasses.
Biology and lifecycle: The species completes one generation per year. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs deposited in oothecae buried 2 to 5 cm deep in the soil, usually in compacted areas such as roadsides or uncultivated lands. Nymphs emerge in late spring or early summer, depending on soil temperature. They undergo five nymphal instars before reaching the adult stage, which is capable of long-distance flight.
Character of damage and economic impact: Both nymphs and adults are voracious feeders. They consume leaf tissue, stems, and seed heads. During outbreaks, high-density swarms can strip entire fields bare, resulting in total crop failure. The damage is particularly severe in drought-prone areas, where the locusts migrate from dried-out pastures into green fields in search of succulent food.
Control measures: Effective management involves integrated pest management strategies. Tillage practices such as deep autumn plowing are essential to expose and destroy overwintering egg pods. Constant monitoring of nymph populations in breeding sites is crucial for timing interventions. When threshold levels are exceeded, chemical control using contact or systemic insecticides is necessary to prevent widespread devastation of the crop canopy.
