Systematic position: The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) belongs to the order Primates and the family Callitrichidae. While widely known as a primate species, in many agricultural regions where they have been introduced or where their population has boomed, they are considered significant pests capable of causing economic damage to commercial plantations.
Damaged crops: These primates are highly versatile in their feeding habits, targeting a wide range of agricultural products. They cause the most severe damage to orchards, including citrus, mango, banana, and papaya plantations. In addition to fruit, they feed on maize crops and are known to raid poultry farms to consume eggs, representing a multi-faceted threat to agricultural income.
Biology and life cycle: Common marmosets exhibit a high reproductive rate, typically giving birth to twins twice annually. They live in complex social groups, which allows them to efficiently exploit agricultural resources. Their ability to adapt to human-altered environments leads to high population densities, making them persistent pests that are difficult to eradicate from large areas.
Nature of damage and harmfulness: The primary form of damage is the mass consumption and destruction of developing fruits, rendering the harvest unmarketable. Furthermore, marmosets exhibit gum-feeding behavior, where they strip bark from trees to access sap. This physical injury causes physiological stress to the trees and provides entry points for wood-rotting fungi and other pathogenic infections, leading to long-term decline in plant health.
Control measures: Managing marmoset populations requires non-lethal and exclusionary tactics due to ethical and environmental considerations:
