Red-spotted plant bug
Calocoris fulvomaculatus
Description
The red-spotted plant bug (Calocoris fulvomaculatus) is a member of the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is a known pest in various agricultural and horticultural systems, particularly affecting specialized crops like hops and several varieties of orchard trees across its native range.
These bugs are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a wide range of host plants. While hops are a primary target, the species is frequently observed on hazel, various fruit trees including apples and plums, and a variety of wild shrubs, making it a persistent challenge for commercial growers.
The life cycle consists of the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The species typically overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs embedded in the bark or shoots of host plants. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately on succulent plant tissues to fuel their rapid development.
The damage is caused by the bug's piercing-sucking mouthparts. By injecting digestive enzymes into the plant tissue, they cause localized cell death, resulting in chlorotic spots, distorted leaf growth, and stunted shoots. If the infestation is severe, the structural integrity and aesthetic value of the foliage are compromised, leading to significant yield losses.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for managing this bug include the following:
- Early season scouting to detect and identify nymphal populations before they reach maturity.
- Implementation of sanitation practices to remove overwintering sites during the dormant season.
- Application of selective insecticides targeting juvenile stages, ensuring minimal harm to beneficial insects.
- Encouraging natural biological control agents such as predatory hemipterans and hymenopteran parasitoids in the garden ecosystem.
