Forest bug
Calocoris nemoralis
Description
Systematic position. The forest bug (Calocoris nemoralis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. As a significant plant-feeding insect, it is found throughout various forest and agricultural ecosystems. While it is often considered a minor pest, its presence in orchards can result in substantial qualitative and quantitative losses if left unmanaged.
Host plants. Calocoris nemoralis is known as a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide variety of plants. Primary hosts include fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as various berry bushes. Beyond cultivated crops, the bug thrives on many wild shrubs and grasses, which often serve as a base for migration into agricultural fields during the growing season.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the forest bug consists of the egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The species typically overwinters in the egg stage, inserted into the bark or soft tissues of young shoots. Nymphs emerge in the spring, coinciding with bud burst. Development through the nymphal stages is temperature-dependent, and the insects are most active during warm, dry weather conditions.
Damage and economic significance. The damage is caused by both adults and nymphs piercing plant tissues to feed on cell sap. This activity leads to characteristic spotting, chlorosis, and the distortion of young leaves. If the insects feed on developing flower buds or fruitlets, it often causes them to wither and drop prematurely. Such damage directly affects fruit yield and quality, often reducing the overall market value of the harvest.
Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural control methods include the pruning and destruction of infested twigs where overwintering eggs are deposited. Chemical control is most effective when applied during the early nymphal stages, as these individuals are highly susceptible to insecticides. Maintaining clean orchard borders and monitoring pest populations are critical practices to keep Calocoris nemoralis below the economic injury level.
