Peruvian peppertree psyllid

The Peruvian peppertree psyllid (Calophya schini) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This tiny sap-sucking insect is primarily known for infesting trees of the genus Schinus, particularly the popular ornamental Peruvian peppertree.

The pest targets species such as Schinus molle and Schinus terebinthifolia. In favorable climates, the population can increase rapidly, leading to heavy infestations that severely compromise the aesthetic value and overall physiological health of these ornamental landscape trees.

The life cycle of Calophya schini is intimately tied to the development of new plant growth. Adult females deposit eggs directly onto the plant tissue. As the nymphs develop through their instars, they feed on plant fluids, which triggers the host plant to produce characteristic localized growths known as galls.

The damage caused by the psyllid is identified by the appearance of numerous red or yellow galls on the leaves. Severe infestations cause leaf curling, premature leaf drop, stunted shoot growth, and general decline of the tree. The weakening of the tree also makes it more susceptible to environmental stressors and opportunistic pathogens.

Management strategies require a multifaceted approach, as the galls provide physical protection for the developing nymphs against contact insecticides. Systemic insecticides applied during the active growing season are often the most effective method. Additionally, regular pruning and disposal of infested foliage, along with proper irrigation and fertilization, help trees maintain the vigor needed to recover from infestation.
