Description
The genus Camelus (camels) belongs to the order Artiodactyla and the family Camelidae. While biologically they are large mammals, in the context of arid agriculture, they often act as non-traditional pests of crops, capable of causing significant economic losses to farmers through uncontrolled grazing and trampling.
Camels damage a wide variety of crops, ranging from grains and melons to young seedlings of fruit trees and reforestation zones. Their diet is characterized by the ability to consume rough, thorny, or even bitter vegetation, which allows them to destroy crops in areas considered safe from other types of livestock.
The biology of these animals involves high mobility and the ability to migrate long distances in search of forage. During periods of drought, camel herds move towards cultivated fields, leading to rapid and intensive grazing pressure that exceeds the restorative capacity of the plants.
The nature of the damage is severe: camels do not just graze the aerial parts of the plants but also destroy the soil structure through trampling. Their powerful jaws allow them to break branches of shrubs and young trees, leading to the long-term loss of productive acreage and degradation of the farm landscape.
Protection strategies primarily focus on physical barriers, such as robust fences or high-voltage electric fencing systems. Furthermore, integrated pest management for livestock includes:
- buffer zone creation;
- constant surveillance of farm perimeters;
- acoustic and visual deterrent systems;
- herd management and coordination with local nomadic communities.
