Systematic position. Campiglossa is a genus belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). These insects are recognized as specialized pests, with many species primarily targeting the flower heads of plants within the Asteraceae family. Understanding their taxonomy is crucial for correct field identification.

Host plants and damage. The primary targets are various ornamental, medicinal, and wild Asteraceae. The larval stage is the most destructive, as they feed on developing achenes (seeds) and receptacle tissues within the flower head. This feeding behavior causes direct losses in seed yield and can lead to the total failure of seed production in affected crops.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female flies oviposit into the buds or young flower heads. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the interior of the inflorescence to feed. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, pupation occurs either within the dried flower head or in the soil surrounding the host plant.

Nature of damage. Infested flower heads typically show signs of stunted growth, premature browning, or severe deformation. The presence of larvae leads to the destruction of the seed-bearing tissues and promotes secondary decay by opportunistic fungi and bacteria. This deterioration makes the plants unattractive for aesthetic purposes and reduces their biological reproductive success.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Campiglossa populations. Effective strategies include:

• Sanitation: Removing and destroying infested plant material to eliminate overwintering pupae.
• Monitoring: Using yellow sticky traps or pheromone baits to detect the emergence of adults.
• Chemical control: Applying selective insecticides during the budding stage to prevent oviposition.
• Cultural practices: Proper crop rotation and field spacing to limit spread.
