The California fruit fly (Campiglossa californica) is a species of dipteran insect belonging to the Tephritidae family. Often referred to as a gall-forming or seed-infesting fly, this insect is a recognized pest that specifically targets plants within the Asteraceae family. Its presence is of particular concern in regions where host crops are cultivated commercially.

The primary host plants for this pest include a wide range of Asteraceae species. The larvae inhabit the flower heads (capitula), where they feed on developing ovules and seeds. This specialized feeding behavior causes significant physiological stress to the plant and directly impacts the yield of seed-producing crops, whether they are grown for floral beauty or agricultural output.

The biological cycle of Campiglossa californica consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female lays eggs into the developing flower buds. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the core of the receptacle. They consume the internal tissues, disrupting the reproductive processes of the flower head. Pupation typically occurs within the remnants of the infested flower or in the upper soil layers.

Visible symptoms of infestation include distorted or shriveled flower heads that fail to mature correctly. The damage is often internal, making early detection difficult until the infestation becomes severe. This fly reduces both the quantity and quality of seed yield, potentially leading to significant economic losses in flower farms and seed nurseries.
