Campiglossa duplex

Description

Campiglossa duplex is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae within the order Diptera. Like other members of this family, it is known for its intricate wing patterns and specialized feeding habits. It is recognized as a potential pest due to the damage its larvae cause to the reproductive tissues of its host plants.

The primary hosts for this species are plants within the Asteraceae family. The larvae are specialized seed feeders, developing inside the flower heads (capitula). By feeding on the developing seeds and receptacle tissues, they directly interfere with the reproductive success of the plant, often leading to total loss of seed yield.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically inserted into the plant's buds by the female using her ovipositor. The larvae then develop inside, consuming the interior of the flower head. Pupation usually occurs in the soil or protected niches within dried plant material, allowing the pest to survive during unfavorable conditions.

The damage caused by Campiglossa duplex is characterized by malformed flower heads, destruction of ovules, and reduced seed production. In high-density populations, the infestation becomes visible through the premature browning or wilting of the flowers, and affected heads may fail to produce viable seeds, causing significant economic impact.

Management strategies focus on reducing pest populations through sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing and destroying infested plant material prevents the next generation from completing its cycle. Additionally, applying insecticides during the adult flight period can significantly decrease egg-laying pressure, protecting the crop during the most vulnerable flowering stages.

  • Sanitation: Removal and destruction of infested plant parts.
  • Crop rotation: Disrupting the life cycle by changing host availability.
  • Monitoring: Utilizing yellow sticky traps to detect adult activity.
  • Targeted insecticide applications during the early budding phase.
