Campodea represents a genus of small, eyeless hexapods belonging to the order Diplura and the family Campodeidae. These organisms thrive in moist soil environments, leaf litter, and under organic debris. While often considered soil-dwellers, in agricultural settings, they can act as opportunistic pests that threaten young seedlings and delicate root systems.

These pests predominantly affect vegetable crops and greenhouse seedlings. By feeding on the tender root hairs and underground stems, they weaken the plants' ability to absorb nutrients and water. This activity is particularly problematic in early spring when environmental conditions are cool and wet, favoring the spread of these arthropods.

The biology of Campodea is centered on their reliance on high humidity. The life cycle involves direct development, meaning the nymphs resemble miniature adults. They reproduce in the upper layers of the soil, laying eggs in secluded cavities. Their population density can fluctuate significantly depending on soil moisture levels and the availability of decaying organic matter.

Damage caused by Campodea is typically characterized by small, scattered surface lesions on the roots. These superficial wounds often serve as entry points for soil-borne pathogens, such as Pythium or Fusarium species. Once infected, the plant tissue begins to decay, leading to stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and in severe cases, plant mortality.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control Campodea. Key strategies include improving soil drainage to prevent overly damp conditions, performing deep cultivation to disrupt their nesting sites, and ensuring that any added organic compost is fully matured. Monitoring soil moisture and maintaining optimal plant vigor are essential for preventing significant agricultural losses.
