Camptomyia is a genus of gall midges belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae within the order Diptera. These small insects are typically associated with decaying wood or the subcortical layers of stressed trees. While many members of the Cecidomyiidae family are specialized phytophages, species within the Camptomyia genus often act as saproxylophages, exploiting damaged tree tissues and necrotic wood surfaces.

This pest primarily affects woody plants and shrubs, frequently colonizing bark wounds, frost cracks, or areas already compromised by fungal pathogens. In agricultural practice, Camptomyia poses a specific risk to fruit nurseries and young orchards. The larval feeding activities expand existing necrotic lesions, inhibiting the plant's ability to heal wounds and creating favorable conditions for secondary microbial infections.

The biology of Camptomyia involves complete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs into bark fissures or natural crevices on the trunk surface. The resulting legless larvae gather in colonies, feeding on the decaying organic matter under the bark. The life cycle is highly dependent on environmental variables such as temperature and humidity, which may allow for multiple generations per season under optimal conditions.

Damage symptoms manifest as the gradual destruction of the cambium layer and bark tissue where the larvae feed. Visually, this appears as softened, decaying tissue, sap exudation, and localized depressions in the bark. The primary damage caused by Camptomyia lies in its role as a facilitator for opportunistic pathogens, which can significantly weaken the tree, leading to stunted growth or, in severe cases, the death of young plants.

Control measures rely on an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and preventive maintenance. Effective strategies include:

  • Prompt cleaning and disinfection of bark wounds on tree trunks.
  • Application of whitewash to trunks to mitigate frost damage.
  • Removal and destruction of heavily infested branches and dead bark.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during peak adult midge flight periods.
  • Maintenance of robust orchard hygiene to enhance overall tree vitality and resilience.
