Description

The Campylomma bug (Campylomma spp.) is a member of the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. Known as small, agile plant bugs, they have emerged as significant pests in commercial orchards. While they possess some predatory behavior, their tendency to feed on developing fruit tissue makes them a substantial economic concern for fruit growers.

These insects primarily target pome and stone fruits, with apples being particularly susceptible. The bugs are opportunistic feeders, meaning they can thrive on various host plants before migrating into orchards. Their presence is often detected only after physical damage to the fruit becomes apparent, highlighting the need for proactive orchard management.

The lifecycle of the Campylomma bug consists of egg, five nymphal stages, and the adult phase. Overwintering occurs as eggs embedded within the bark of twigs. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and initiate feeding. Depending on the geographical region and climate, the pest can complete multiple overlapping generations, complicating timing for control applications.

Chemical control should be employed judiciously, targeting threshold levels rather than calendar-based spraying. By selecting soft, selective insecticides, growers can maintain the beneficial insect population, which is crucial for long-term suppression of the Campylomma bug. Proper orchard sanitation and careful monitoring remain the cornerstones of successful management.
