Potato wart is a devastating quarantine disease caused by the obligate parasite fungus Synchytrium endobioticum, belonging to the Synchytriaceae family. This pathogen is considered a significant threat to global food security as it affects potato crops and other Solanaceae members, leading to severe yield losses in infected areas.

The biology of this fungus is defined by the production of thick-walled resting spores, known as zoosporangia, which remain viable in the soil for decades. Spread occurs primarily through the movement of contaminated tubers, infested soil on farm machinery, and runoff water. The fungus thrives in cool, moist soil conditions, which trigger the release of zoospores that infect the meristematic tissues of the host plant.

The symptoms of the disease include the development of hypertrophic galls on tubers, stolons, and stem bases, resembling a cauliflower head. These galls initially appear firm but eventually turn brown and decay, releasing millions of resting spores into the surrounding soil. The economic impact is substantial, as infected fields are often subject to long-term quarantine restrictions, preventing potato cultivation.

Crop protection strategies are centered on preventing the introduction of the pathogen into non-infested regions. Strict phytosanitary protocols are essential, including the prohibition of moving soil or tubers from infected zones. Furthermore, crop rotation is a recommended practice to interrupt the host-parasite cycle, although it is not a complete cure due to the long persistence of resting spores.
