Description
Canephora hirsuta, commonly known as the hairy bagworm, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Psychidae. The insect is named after its unique survival strategy: the larvae construct protective cases (bags) made from fragments of bark, leaves, and twigs, held together with strong silk.
This pest is a polyphage and causes damage to a wide range of woody and shrubby plants. Young deciduous plants, fruit trees, and ornamental crops are most frequently affected. In cases of high population density, the insect can significantly weaken the plant's natural defenses.
The biology of the species is characterized by pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males are winged and capable of flight, while females are wingless and spend their entire lives inside the protective case. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages, with the adult female stage occurring exclusively within the silken cocoon.
The damage pattern involves the defoliation of leaves. Young larvae skeletonize the foliage, while older individuals consume the entire leaf blade, leaving only petioles and major veins. The economic damage stems from reduced tree growth rates and impaired photosynthesis, which is particularly critical for young saplings.
The protection strategy combines agrotechnical and chemical measures. Key interventions include:
- Manual collection and destruction of cases during the winter and early spring.
- Application of biological preparations based on Bacillus thuringiensis during the larval hatching period.
- Utilization of systemic insecticides during severe outbreaks of the pest.
