Description
The genus Capitites belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. These insects are widely recognized as specialized pests targeting plants within the Asteraceae family. In agricultural settings, they are particularly notable for affecting sunflowers and other composite flowers, acting as significant inhibitors of seed development.
The primary host plants for these flies include sunflowers, thistles, burdocks, and various wormwood species. While adult flies feed on floral nectar, the true damage is caused by the larval stage, which thrives inside the developing flower heads, specifically targeting the ovules and the interior tissues of the receptacle.
The biological development follows a complete metamorphosis cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle is synchronized with the blooming period of the host plants. Females deposit eggs directly into the floral tissues. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the flower head, passing through several larval instars while consuming the developing seeds.
Damage assessment reveals substantial yield loss, often manifesting as shriveled or empty seeds. The destruction of floral tissues not only reduces seed quantity and weight but also lowers the oil content in oilseed crops. Furthermore, the larval feeding activity exposes the plant to secondary infections, such as grey mold or other rot-inducing pathogens.
