Capitites ramulosa is a species of tephritid fruit fly belonging to the order Diptera, family Tephritidae. These insects are recognized as specialized pests that primarily target the reproductive structures of plants within the Asteraceae family, causing significant economic concern in specific agricultural sectors.
The host range of Capitites ramulosa is restricted to plants of the sunflower family (Asteraceae). In agricultural settings, it is primarily observed on various sunflower cultivars and numerous wild weeds belonging to the same botanical group, which often act as bridge hosts throughout the growing season.
The biology of this species is centered around its larval development within the flower head. Adult females utilize their ovipositor to insert eggs into the developing buds. Once hatched, the larvae consume the internal tissues of the receptacle and the developing achenes, preventing the formation of viable seeds and causing physiological stress to the plant structure.
