Description
The Wormwood aphid (Capitophorus similis) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is a highly specialized species primarily associated with plants of the genus Artemisia. While primarily found on wild wormwood, the population dynamics of this species can lead to the infestation of related agricultural or ornamental Asteraceae crops.
The biology of Capitophorus similis involves a complex cycle of generations. The species typically overwinters in the egg stage on the bark or stems of host plants. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices, which initiate parthenogenetic reproduction. Throughout the growing season, both apterous and alate forms are produced, allowing the colony to expand and migrate to new host tissues rapidly.
Damage caused by these aphids includes chlorosis, curling of leaves, and stunted growth of shoots. By inserting their stylets into the plant phloem, they deplete the plant of essential nutrients and carbohydrates. This physical stress often leads to a reduction in the plant's overall photosynthetic capacity and creates necrotic spots on the foliage where the aphids have fed extensively.
Beyond direct damage, Capitophorus similis is recognized for its potential as a vector for various plant pathogens. The introduction of viral particles during the feeding process can cause severe systemic infections, leading to distorted growth and significant economic losses in commercial horticulture and field crops.
Management of this pest involves several key practices. Monitoring population levels is essential during the early stages of plant development. When chemical control is necessary, application of systemic insecticides is often effective. However, to maintain ecological balance, it is recommended to preserve natural predators such as lady beetles (Coccinellidae) and lacewings (Chrysopidae), which are effective in reducing aphid numbers naturally.
