Description
Systematic position. The cocklebur aphid (Capitophorus xanthii) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest species that maintains a strong ecological relationship with plants from the Asteraceae family, most notably the common cocklebur, as well as agricultural crops like sunflowers.
Host plants and damage. The pest primarily colonizes Xanthium species, but populations often migrate to commercial sunflower fields. The aphids feed on plant sap, which leads to leaf curling, chlorosis, and stunted development. In severe cases, the infestation causes significant physiological stress to the plant, reducing its ability to form healthy seeds and heads.
Biology and life cycle. Capitophorus xanthii exhibits a complex life cycle with multiple generations throughout the growing season. It reproduces primarily through parthenogenesis, allowing for rapid population growth in favorable conditions. The aphids are usually found on the underside of leaves, which provides a microclimate protected from predators and environmental extremes.

By feeding on vascular tissues, the aphids facilitate the spread of systemic plant pathogens.
