The Caper fly (Capparimyia bipustulata) is a destructive dipteran insect belonging to the family Tephritidae. It is recognized as one of the primary pests affecting caper (Capparis spinosa) cultivation worldwide, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions where the plant is commercially grown.
This species is highly host-specific, exclusively attacking plants within the Capparaceae family. The insect's impact is focused on the reproductive structures of the plant, specifically targeting floral buds and developing fruit, which are the main commercial products harvested for international markets.
The biological cycle begins when the adult female pierces the epidermis of a caper bud to deposit eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding on the internal tissues, causing the bud to wither or fail to develop properly. After completing their larval development, they typically exit the fruit to pupate in the soil beneath the host plant.
Infestation symptoms include localized chlorosis and deformation of the buds. As the larvae consume the internal structures, the buds often become hollow or filled with frass, rendering them useless for culinary purposes. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial economic losses, significantly reducing the yield per hectare if not managed effectively.
