Description

Capparimyia melanaspis is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Tephritidae, order Diptera. It is recognized in agronomy as a primary limiting factor for the commercial production of capers (Capparis spinosa), as its life cycle is strictly synchronized with the development of the host plant.

The pest primarily targets the reproductive organs of the host plant. The larvae consume the tissues within the flower buds and developing fruits, which significantly reduces the yield of capers, as these organs constitute the main commercial product of the plant.

The life cycle involves the adult female ovipositing directly into the tissues of the bud or young fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the interior of the fruit, consuming the fleshy tissues and seeds. This internal feeding remains hidden until the symptoms of damage become irreversible.

The damage is characterized by the deformation and premature abscission of flower buds. In mature or developing fruits, the infestation leads to tissue necrosis and rot, rendering the crop unmarketable. Infestation rates can be high in regions where capers are grown intensively without proper management.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential for control. Effective measures include:

  • prompt harvesting of buds before the larvae reach maturity;
  • field sanitation by removing and destroying infested plant material;
  • monitoring with pheromone traps and localized insecticide applications to control adult fly populations during the peak laying season.
