Skeleton shrimp

The skeleton shrimp (Latin Caprella linearis) is a unique species of marine crustacean belonging to the order Amphipoda and the family Caprellidae. These organisms are highly specialized, possessing an elongated, thin body structure that allows them to cling firmly to seaweed, hydroids, and various artificial structures in marine environments.

While not a pest to terrestrial plants, Caprella linearis is considered a nuisance in the seaweed aquaculture industry. These crustaceans colonize commercial algae crops in large numbers, often covering the thalli in dense mats. This infestation negatively impacts the health and growth rate of the farmed seaweed, reducing the overall quality of the final product.

The biology of the skeleton shrimp is characterized by an efficient reproductive strategy. Females carry their offspring in a brood pouch, and once released, the young immediately attach themselves to the nearby substrate. Due to their short life cycle, populations can explode rapidly in areas where organic debris is abundant, leading to severe localized infestations.

The damage caused by these crustaceans is both mechanical and physiological. By clustering on the seaweed, they physically damage the plant's surface and effectively compete for nutrients. Furthermore, the dense covering of shrimp blocks sunlight, hindering the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis, which causes stunted growth and leads to tissue necrosis.

Management and protection strategies include:

• Frequent monitoring of seaweed crops for early detection of colonization.
• Mechanical cleaning of cultivation ropes and substrates to remove colonies.
• Optimizing stocking densities to prevent excessive accumulation of detritus.
• Implementing biological controls by encouraging natural predators of caprellids.

Successful control requires rigorous maintenance of the aquatic environment. Regular inspection of equipment and adherence to proper aquaculture practices are crucial for preventing mass proliferation, ensuring that the health of the seaweed crop remains high throughout the entire growing season.
