The Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) is a member of the order Cypriniformes and the family Cyprinidae. While often considered a valuable fish, in specific agricultural contexts, such as flooded rice paddies and irrigation networks, it acts as a disruptive pest that interferes with standard agronomic practices.
The primary agricultural damage is caused in rice fields, where the fish damages young rice shoots. By foraging in the sediment for food, they uproot the sensitive seedlings, which leads to significant losses in crop density and overall reduction in potential harvest yields throughout the growing season.
The biological success of this species is attributed to its extreme environmental resilience. It can thrive in hypoxic conditions where other fish species perish.
