The common linnet (Carduelis cannabina) is a small passerine bird belonging to the finch family (Fringillidae). While often valued for its song, in an agricultural context, it is recognized as a pest capable of causing significant damage to various crops by consuming seeds during the ripening phase, which can lead to substantial yield losses for farmers.
The species inhabits open landscapes characterized by bushes, hedgerows, and forest edges, which frequently overlap with agricultural areas. They are highly gregarious birds, forming large flocks outside the breeding season. These flocks move across agricultural landscapes, identifying areas with easily accessible seeds, often settling on cultivated fields to feed on the maturing crops.
The primary damage caused by linnets involves the consumption of seeds from crops such as sunflowers, hemp, oilseeds, and various grasses. By pecking at seed heads and flowering structures during the milky and wax ripeness stages, these birds reduce the quantity and overall quality of the harvest, impacting both commercial production and seed multiplication plots.
Biologically, the species is characterized by its high reproductive rate, often raising multiple broods within a single season. Although young nestlings rely on a diet of insects provided by the parents—which can be locally beneficial—adult linnets predominantly feed on vegetable matter. This dietary preference for seeds during their active movement phase makes them problematic for field management.
To effectively protect crops, growers should implement an integrated approach. This includes the use of acoustic repellers that mimic predator calls, the deployment of visual deterrents like scarecrows or reflective ribbons, and the strategic management of surrounding weeds to reduce local nesting sites. Timely harvesting is also critical to minimize the window of opportunity for bird damage.
