This insect is known for its highly specialized parasitic lifestyle, primarily affecting wild and domestic birds. It is particularly notorious for its impact on nestlings during the brooding period, as the flies occupy nests to feed on the blood of developing chicks.

The biology of Carnus hemapterus is quite remarkable. Once an adult fly locates a host, it often sheds its wings, becoming flightless and specialized for movement through the feathers of the host. The life cycle is synchronized with the nesting period; larvae develop in the nesting material by consuming organic debris, while adults emerge to feed on the blood of the nestlings.
