Carpomya

Carpomya (lat. Carpomya) is a genus of insects classified under the fruit fly family Tephritidae, belonging to the order Diptera. These highly specialized carpophagous flies represent a significant threat to global agriculture, as their larvae develop exclusively within the fruits of various horticultural crops, rendering them completely unsuitable for market and human consumption.

The most prominent species within this genus is the melon fly (Carpomya pardalina). The primary hosts for this pest include cucurbits, specifically melons and watermelons. Additionally, other species in the genus target the fruits of wild plants such as rose hips, making the entire genus a subject of strict quarantine regulations and phytosanitary monitoring in many agricultural zones.

The life cycle of these flies is intricately linked to the developmental stages of host fruits. Adult females oviposit beneath the epidermis of young fruits or ovaries. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the fruit flesh, feeding on the pulp and creating extensive larval mines. Once the larval stage is complete, the larvae emerge from the fruit to pupate in the soil, which serves as their overwintering site.

The damage caused by Carpomya is characterized by premature yellowing, softening, and putrefaction of the fruit. As larvae create internal tunnels, they facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, which rapidly decompose the tissue. The economic impact can be devastating, with infestation rates often resulting in total crop loss if left uncontrolled.
