Honeysuckle fruit fly

The honeysuckle fruit fly (Carpomya incompleta) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Tephritidae family. This fly is highly host-specific, primarily targeting the fruits of various honeysuckle species, often causing substantial fruit drop and quality degradation.

The pest's primary host plants are species within the Lonicera genus. The adults are small flies that become active during the fruiting phase of the honeysuckle. They are known for their specific oviposition behavior, where they insert eggs directly beneath the skin of developing berries, ensuring the larvae have immediate access to food.

The life cycle of Carpomya incompleta is closely tied to the phenology of the host plant. They overwinter as pupae in the soil. Upon emergence in late spring, the adults mate and begin laying eggs in the young, forming berries. The larvae feed inside the fruit, causing it to ripen prematurely and eventually drop from the bush.

The primary damage is direct consumption of the berry's pulp and seeds by the developing larvae. Infested berries are easily identified by their uneven coloration, softness, and premature decay. Because the larvae remain protected inside the fruit for most of their development, they are challenging to control once the infestation is established.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Cultural practices such as cultivating the soil under the bushes in the fall and early spring can disrupt the pupal stage. Additionally, installing barriers or using netting can prevent female flies from accessing the fruits. Chemical interventions must be carefully timed to coincide with adult flight before egg-laying occurs.
