Description
The rose hip fruit fly (Carpomya schineri) is a destructive dipteran insect belonging to the Tephritidae family. It is recognized as a major pest of wild and cultivated roses, specifically targeting the fruit stage of the plant, which poses a significant threat to commercial production.
The primary host for this pest is the rose hip (Rosa spp.). The damage is caused by the larvae, which burrow into the developing fruit. By feeding on the flesh and seeds, the larvae effectively destroy the fruit's nutritional and structural integrity, rendering it worthless for processing.
The life cycle of Carpomya schineri is strictly tied to the host's phenology. The insect overwinters as a puparium within the soil. Adult flies emerge during the flowering period, and females immediately seek out young fruits to oviposit their eggs directly beneath the epidermis, ensuring food access for the hatching larvae.
Symptoms of infestation include premature ripening, darkening, and shriveling of the rose hips. If a fruit is opened, one can observe larval tunnels and larval excrement.
