Ber fruit fly

Systematic position. The Ber fruit fly (Carpomya vesuviana) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is a highly specialized pest that acts as a significant threat to jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana and Ziziphus jujuba) orchards worldwide, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.

Host crops and damage profile. The insect specifically targets the fruits of the Ziziphus genus. Female flies deposit eggs directly under the skin of the fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the pulp, creating galleries. The internal feeding destroys the flesh, leading to shriveling, premature dropping, and the development of secondary fungal infections, rendering the fruit unfit for consumption or market sale.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The insect overwinters as a pupa in the soil underneath the tree canopy. Adult emergence occurs in synchronization with the fruit-setting stage of the jujube tree. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season, depending on the availability of host fruits and climatic conditions like temperature and humidity.

Economic impact. This fly is considered a major limiting factor for commercial jujube production. In cases of severe infestation, farmers may lose up to 100% of their yield. Because the larvae remain protected inside the fruit, they are difficult to control once they have established themselves, making preventive measures crucial for orchard health.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

• Sanitation: Regularly collecting and disposing of infested dropped fruit to break the life cycle.
• Soil tillage: Cultivating the soil around the tree base to expose or crush overwintering pupae.
• Monitoring: Utilizing pheromone or food-based traps to time chemical interventions accurately.
• Chemical control: Spraying targeted insecticides during the early fruit development stage before larvae penetrate the skin.
