African fruit fly

Carpophthoromyia dimidiata belongs to the family Tephritidae (order Diptera). This species is a notorious fruit fly known for its impact on various horticultural crops within its native African range. It is closely monitored by agricultural authorities due to the significant losses it can cause in fruit production.

The pest primarily targets diverse fruit-bearing trees, including figs and various native species. The larvae feed internally on the fruit flesh, which effectively destroys the fruit quality, making it mushy and highly susceptible to secondary bacterial and fungal infections that lead to fruit decay and premature fruit drop.

The life cycle is highly specialized, beginning when adult females use their ovipositors to insert eggs into developing fruit. Once hatched, the larvae consume the interior tissue throughout their development stages. After reaching maturity, the larvae exit the fruit and drop to the soil, where they pupate until the emergence of the next generation of adults.

Damage caused by this fly is extensive. Infested fruits often show tiny entry points followed by internal browning and tissue breakdown. This makes the harvest unmarketable and creates substantial economic challenges for farmers, particularly in regions where this fly is endemic or potentially invasive.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Key control strategies include:

• Rigorous sanitation by collecting and burying fallen fruit.
• Application of bait sprays targeting adult flies before oviposition.
• Strict quarantine regulations to prevent the spread to non-infested areas.
