Southern cassowary

Taxonomic classification: The Southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) belongs to the order Casuariiformes and the family Casuariidae. As one of the world's largest flightless birds, its presence in agricultural landscapes—particularly in tropical areas adjacent to rainforests—presents unique challenges for farmers and agronomists.

Crops affected: The species is known to cause significant damage to commercial fruit plantations. Primary targets include tropical fruit orchards such as mango, papaya, banana, and oil palm. Because they are large-bodied, they prioritize accessible fruit on lower branches, which can lead to the total loss of the harvest in specific sections of a plantation.

Biology and development: Southern cassowaries are solitary and territorial birds. Their life cycle is characterized by slow maturation and high longevity, with individuals living up to 40 years. Their nutritional behavior is opportunistic, meaning they will readily exploit high-energy food sources provided by agricultural crops whenever they are available within their expansive home ranges.

Nature of damage and pest status: Beyond consuming harvestable fruit, the damage caused by these birds is often mechanical. As they move through an orchard, their significant body weight and powerful legs can break young trees, crush irrigation systems, and disturb soil mulch. Furthermore, they facilitate the spread of invasive weed species by depositing seeds throughout the plantation, increasing labor costs for weed management.

Control measures: As the Southern cassowary is a protected species in most of its natural habitat, lethal control is strictly prohibited and illegal. Integrated management focuses on exclusion and deterrence. Installing robust, high-tensile fencing is the most reliable method for keeping them out. Additionally, non-lethal deterrents such as motion-activated sprinklers or noise-emitting devices can be used to discourage their approach during the peak ripening season.
