Description

Systematic position. Catantops is a genus of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae (grasshoppers and locusts). These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests in various parts of the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where they pose a persistent threat to food security and industrial crops.

Damaged crops. Being generalist herbivores, Catantops species feed on a wide array of host plants. Economically important crops frequently attacked include cereals such as maize, sorghum, rice, and wheat, as well as legumes, sugarcane, and various pasture grasses. When population densities are high, they can cause total defoliation of cultivated vegetation in a relatively short timeframe.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Catantops comprises the egg stage, nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid within the soil, where they may undergo diapause to withstand drought or cold. Once environmental conditions become favorable, nymphs emerge and proceed through several molts. The nymphs are flightless but highly active feeders, increasing their destructive potential as they approach the adult stage.

Nature of damage and pest status. The damage caused by these insects is characterized by the consumption of leaves, shoots, and sometimes young stems. Due to their chewing mouthparts, they remove large areas of leaf tissue, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. In cases of severe infestations, the result is stunted growth, yield loss, and in extreme scenarios, the complete destruction of the crop stand.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Catantops populations.
