Caulotops

Caulotops is a genus of insects belonging to the family Miridae, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are known for parasitizing various plant species by feeding on their cellular sap. In agricultural practice, they are considered potential pests capable of significantly reducing crop yields and negatively affecting the market quality of various agricultural products.

The primary hosts attacked by this pest include species from the Cactaceae family, as well as several other ornamental or tropical plants. In certain cases, due to shifting ecological conditions or the expansion of their natural range, Caulotops may infest agricultural plantations, leading to the wilting and deformation of essential plant organs.

The biology of Caulotops is closely linked to climatic factors. The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph (larva), and adult stages. Both adults and nymphs maintain a cryptic lifestyle, primarily congregating on the undersides of leaves or within plant shoot axils. The high fecundity of females allows populations to expand rapidly under favorable temperature and humidity conditions.

At the puncture sites created by the insect's proboscis, plant tissues die off, which disrupts photosynthesis and compromises the plant's overall immune system. In instances of mass infestation, the pest can cause premature leaf drop and stunting of fruit development.
