Description
The willow-carrot aphid (Cavariella capreae) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Aphididae family. It is a heteroecious aphid, meaning it alternates its host plants between woody trees and herbaceous plants to complete its complex biological life cycle.
This pest primarily attacks members of the Apiaceae family, with carrots being the most severely affected host. Other vulnerable crops include celery, parsley, dill, and parsnips. Willows (Salix spp.) serve as the primary host where the insect overwinters in the egg stage.
The life cycle begins in spring when the eggs hatch on willows. After several generations, winged adults migrate to carrot fields and other umbelliferous crops. Throughout the summer, the population grows exponentially on these crops before returning to willow trees in the autumn to lay overwintering eggs.
Damage caused by this aphid includes severe leaf curling, stunted plant growth, and yellowing foliage. By sucking phloem sap, the aphids drain the plant's resources, which results in reduced root weight and poor quality of the harvest. Furthermore, they are efficient vectors for several plant viruses, such as the carrot motley dwarf virus.

- Weed management to eliminate alternative hosts within the Apiaceae family.
