The white-headed capuchin (lat. Cebus capucinus) is a primate belonging to the Cebidae family. While protected in many forest ecosystems, in agricultural regions of Central and South America, this species is frequently identified as a significant crop pest. Their high level of cognitive function and social intelligence makes them challenging adversaries for farmers seeking to protect their livelihoods.
These primates cause severe damage to a variety of essential crops. Their diet in agricultural settings primarily consists of maize, sugar cane, bananas, cacao, and coffee fruits. By targeting high-value crops at various stages of maturity, capuchins can render a significant portion of the harvest unfit for commercial sale or human consumption, directly threatening the economic stability of local farms.
From a biological standpoint, the capuchin's behavior is dictated by its gregarious nature. They live in structured social groups that allow for collective foraging and territory expansion. Their life cycle is characterized by slow development, but their ability to learn and transmit knowledge within the troop allows them to quickly adapt to the presence of human-provided food sources near their forest habitats.
The damage caused is often wasteful rather than consumptive. A single capuchin troop can strip trees of unripe fruit, tasting and discarding dozens of items for every one fully consumed. This behavior creates massive waste and exposes the remaining fruit to secondary infections, such as fungi and pests, which exploit the wounds in the plant tissue, leading to further decay across the orchard.
