Description

Celidodacus is a genus of insects belonging to the Tephritidae family, also known as fruit flies, within the order Diptera. These highly specialized pests are recognized for their host specificity, making them a significant agricultural threat to certain fruit and vegetable crops in their native and introduced ranges.

This pest primarily affects plants within the Cucurbitaceae family and various other fruit-bearing species. The larvae develop inside the fruit tissues, causing premature fruit drop, internal decay, and a complete loss of marketability. In favorable climatic conditions, the population can cause substantial yield losses across large plantations.

The biology of Celidodacus follows a complete metamorphosis cycle, including the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females oviposit directly into the soft tissues of the developing fruit or ovaries. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the pulp, creating galleries that facilitate secondary infections by bacteria and fungi, which accelerate rot.

Symptoms of infestation include visible puncture marks on the fruit skin, followed by discolored, sunken, or decaying areas. The economic impact is severe, as damaged produce is unsuitable for storage, long-distance transportation, or processing, resulting in direct financial losses for commercial growers.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to mitigate risks. Recommended measures include:
