Taxonomic status: The bamboo locust (Ceracris kiangsu) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. It is a highly specialized herbivore, primarily known for causing extensive damage to bamboo forests in Southeast Asian countries. It is categorized as a significant agricultural and forestry pest in its native range.

Host plants: The primary hosts for Ceracris kiangsu are various species of bamboo. However, due to its polyphagous potential during outbreak periods, it can migrate to neighboring crops, including corn, sugarcane, and other graminoids, posing a threat to food security in regions where bamboo production is a key economic activity.

Biology and life cycle: The species exhibits incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in the soil near bamboo clumps. Nymphs go through five instars, feeding voraciously on fresh leaves. The population dynamics are heavily influenced by temperature and precipitation patterns, which dictate the timing of hatching and development.

Damage and harmfulness: Both nymphs and adults possess strong mandibles capable of consuming large amounts of leaf tissue. Feeding activity often results in complete defoliation of bamboo plants. This injury significantly weakens the plants, stunts their growth, reduces the harvestable yield, and can lead to the mortality of entire stands if left uncontrolled.

Control measures: Management of Ceracris kiangsu involves a combination of monitoring and intervention strategies to prevent outbreaks. Recommended practices include:
