Description

The broom moth (Ceramica pisi) is a polyphagous insect belonging to the family Noctuidae of the order Lepidoptera. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its ability to affect a wide variety of cultivated crops across Europe and temperate regions of Asia, leading to reduced yields if left unmanaged.

This species is highly adaptable and feeds on various host plants. Its primary targets include legumes such as peas, beans, and lentils, but it is also commonly found attacking potato, sugar beet, cabbage, and numerous garden vegetables. The moth's ability to utilize wild plants as alternative food sources makes it a persistent threat in agricultural landscapes.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect overwinters as a pupa within the soil. Adult moths typically emerge in late spring or early summer. Females lay batches of eggs on the underside of leaves. After hatching, the larvae undergo several molts, feeding voraciously throughout the vegetative stages of the host plant.

The damage caused by Ceramica pisi is primarily due to the larval stage. Young larvae skeletonize the foliage, while older larvae consume entire leaves, sometimes causing severe defoliation. This extensive feeding reduces the photosynthetic area of the plants, ultimately stunting growth and significantly impacting the quantity and quality of the final harvest.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices such as deep autumn plowing help expose and destroy overwintering pupae.
