Description

Taxonomic position. Cerapteryx is a genus of moths belonging to the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. These insects are recognized as agricultural pests in various temperate regions, where their larval stages can cause significant economic losses to staple crops by feeding on plant tissues during critical growth stages.

Affected crops. This pest primarily attacks cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to commercial grain fields, Cerapteryx larvae can infest various forage grasses. The presence of these pests is often linked to field margins and areas with poor weed management, which serve as alternative food sources for the larvae.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Key cultural practices include deep autumn plowing to disturb pupal sites, proper crop rotation, and rigorous weed control. When economic thresholds are exceeded, targeted applications of registered insecticides should be used to minimize crop losses while preserving beneficial entomofauna.
