Palm aphid
Cerataphis brasiliensis
Description
Systematic position: The palm aphid (Cerataphis brasiliensis) is classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized species with a distinct appearance; adults are flattened and oval-shaped, surrounded by a white waxy fringe, which leads many gardeners to misidentify them as scale insects or whiteflies at first glance.
Host plants: This pest is primarily a threat to ornamental plants in protected environments. Its favorite hosts include various palm species, such as Chamaedorea and Areca, as well as orchids and other tropical plants. Infestations are frequently observed in greenhouses, conservatories, and interior landscaping where climate conditions are relatively constant.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Cerataphis brasiliensis is characterized by high reproductive efficiency via parthenogenesis. In favorable indoor conditions, there is no diapause stage, allowing the population to grow rapidly throughout the year. The aphids settle in dense colonies on the undersides of leaves, along the midribs, and near the growing points of the host plants.
Damage and harm: The damage is caused by the extraction of phloem sap, which deprives the host of vital nutrients and water. Typical symptoms include leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and stunted growth. Furthermore, the aphids excrete large amounts of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers the leaves and severely restricts the plant's ability to photosynthesize.
Control measures: Effective management of this pest involves several key strategies:
- Strict quarantine and inspection of new plants introduced into the collection.
- Washing foliage with mild insecticidal soaps to remove colonies and honeydew.
- Applying systemic insecticides, specifically those containing neonicotinoids, when manual removal is insufficient.
- Maintaining optimal air circulation and humidity to make conditions less favorable for rapid pest multiplication.
