Description

Cerataphis freycinetiae is a distinct species of aphid belonging to the family Aphididae, subfamily Hormaphidinae. Due to its flattened, scale-like body covered in waxy secretions, it is often misidentified as a whitefly or a scale insect, which frequently delays effective treatment strategies in home gardening.

The pest primarily targets tropical ornamental plants, with a strong preference for members of the Arecaceae (palm) and Orchidaceae families. Infestations are commonly reported on greenhouse-grown plants such as Chamaedorea palms and various epiphytic orchids, causing significant stress to indoor plant collections.

The biological cycle of this species is adapted to constant greenhouse temperatures, allowing for continuous reproduction through parthenogenesis. Adults and nymphs feed by inserting their stylets into the plant tissue, focusing their colonization on the undersides of leaves and along the veins to tap into the vascular sap.

Damage caused by Cerataphis freycinetiae is significant, manifesting as leaf yellowing, stunting, and deformation. The insects excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer of mold not only looks unsightly but also blocks stomata, significantly reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis.

Control strategies must be comprehensive to be successful. Initial steps include physical cleaning of leaves and ensuring high-quality sanitation in the greenhouse. Chemical control usually involves the application of systemic insecticides, as these reach the insects via the plant's sap, bypassing their protective waxy layer.
