Taxonomic position. The species Ceratitis anonae belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is a highly significant agricultural pest that poses a major threat to fruit production in tropical and subtropical regions. Its high potential for rapid population growth makes it a serious concern for farmers and quarantine authorities globally.

Host plants. The pest is polyphagous, attacking a wide range of fruit crops. Its primary hosts include avocado, mango, papaya, guava, various citrus species, and specifically fruits of the genus Annona. Due to its broad host range, the presence of this insect can devastate mixed orchard systems and significantly reduce export potential.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use their ovipositors to pierce the skin of ripening fruit and deposit eggs underneath. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the fruit pulp, creating extensive tunnels. Mature larvae emerge from the fruit and drop to the soil to pupate, completing the cycle until the next generation of adults emerges.

Damage and economic impact. Larval feeding destroys the fruit structure from the inside, making it mushy and highly susceptible to secondary bacterial and fungal infections. Symptoms typically include skin depressions, soft spots, and internal rotting. These damages render the fruits unmarketable and unfit for human consumption, often leading to total yield losses if left uncontrolled.

Control measures. Effective management of the Annona fruit fly relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Essential practices include:

  • Deployment of pheromone or protein-based bait traps for population monitoring.
  • Sanitation, including the collection and deep burial of all infested or fallen fruits to prevent larval development.
  • Application of bait sprays containing specific insecticides to target adult flies.
  • Strict implementation of quarantine regulations to prevent the movement of infested produce to non-infested areas.
