Description

Ceratitis barbata is a dangerous species of dipteran insects belonging to the family Tephritidae. This pest is part of a group of fruit flies known to infest various agricultural crops, significantly reducing the marketability and quality of harvested fruits.

The pest primarily targets tropical and subtropical fruit crops. Larvae develop inside the fruit, feeding on the pulp, which renders the produce unfit for consumption and transport. Under high infestation pressure, crop losses can be severe, impacting both yield quantity and overall farm profitability.

The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs under the skin of the fruit using its ovipositor. The hatched larvae go through several instars, feeding extensively on plant tissues, before exiting the fruit to pupate in the soil or within plant debris.

Damage manifests as premature fruit drop and the development of rot in areas punctured by the larvae. Externally, infested fruit often appears deformed, showing visible entry holes and soft spots. These wounds provide entry points for secondary pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, causing rapid decay.

Protection strategies involve a combination of integrated pest management (IPM) practices:

  • Prompt collection and destruction of fallen fruits to prevent larval pupation.
  • Deployment of pheromone traps for population monitoring and adult suppression.
  • Application of approved insecticides during periods of peak adult activity.
  • Strict phytosanitary protocols to prevent the spread of the pest during international trade.
