Kola nut fruit fly

Ceratitis colae is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. This fly is highly specialized and primarily attacks the fruit of the kola nut tree (Cola nitida). It is a major concern for farmers in West and Central Africa, where kola nut production is a vital economic activity.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the developing kola nuts. By consuming the inner parts of the seed, the larvae render the nuts entirely useless for both local consumption and international trade. Because the larvae are protected inside the fruit, detection is often delayed until significant damage has already occurred.

The life cycle begins when the female fly inserts eggs through the skin of the fruit. After hatching, the larvae feed extensively within the seed. Once they reach maturity, the larvae exit the nut and drop to the ground to pupate in the soil. Environmental conditions such as humidity and temperature play a key role in the speed of the fly's reproductive cycle.

Economic damage is categorized by high crop losses, often reaching up to 50% or more in unprotected orchards. Beyond direct feeding damage, the tunnels created by larvae promote the entry of fungi and bacteria, leading to the rapid decay of the entire fruit cluster and making the produce unsuitable for processing.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and preventive strategies to mitigate the impact of the pest. Key practices include:

• Sanitation, involving the removal and destruction of all infested fallen fruit to reduce pupation sites.
• Use of male-annihilation techniques (MAT) with pheromone-baited traps to reduce population density.
• Soil management to disrupt the pupation process of the larvae.
• Biological control through the encouragement of native parasitoid wasps that prey on the fly larvae.
