The Ceratitis cosyra, commonly known as the marula fruit fly, is a member of the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant agricultural pests affecting fruit production in sub-Saharan Africa.

This fly primarily infests mangoes, which are highly susceptible to its attacks. Beyond mangoes, it also targets marula fruits, peaches, guava, and various other tropical tree fruits. The economic damage is particularly severe in commercial orchards during peak harvest seasons.

The biological development of the marula fruit fly progresses through four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females puncture the fruit skin with their ovipositors to deposit eggs deep within the flesh, ensuring an immediate food source for the developing larvae.

The damage caused by the larvae manifests as internal decay, discoloration, and structural breakdown of the fruit. This infestation leads to premature fruit drop, making the produce unmarketable and causing significant financial losses for farmers worldwide.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical controls. This includes strictly removing and disposing of fallen fruit, utilizing pheromone traps to disrupt mating cycles, and applying targeted insecticide treatments during critical infestation periods.
